Our dad had been taken by the gangs in Mexico for not paying his gambling bills. We never knew what happened to him. The house was all that my mother could afford with her job at the local butchery. She worked plucking the chickens all day from very early in the morning until the sun went down. In the summers her hours were really long but in the winter she came home around four in the afternoon. The winters were hard because she had to leave so early. The factory didn't use the lights because it would be too expensive to run the coolers and the lights so when it got dark, they left and didn't get paid for any extra hours.Sometimes mom would bring one of us to work with her so the other brother could watch our little sister who was a handful. She was always getting into things. If mom could she would bring all of us to the chicken butchery but our sister was too young and caused too much mischief. My brother and I would alternate staying home and watching her. Mom didn't trust my twin brother and to be at home together because we were very bad when alone. We didn't mind because when we went to work with mom we would help out with the cleaning of the factory and get paid for it.One night mom and Henrico, my brother, were staying at the chicken plant late so I had to feed Sophia and put her to bed. It was in October when the sun goes down earlier. Octobers are always spooky because mom sometimes worked late to prepare for the upcoming holiday and work after dark. It only lasted about two weeks but I hated those long two weeks waiting for her to get home every night.Next door to our little shack there was an old man who was dying. The family couldn't pay the medical bills for the special treatment he needed so they were just going to let him die at home. That scared me the most. He was so old and malnourished that you could see his bones through his face. Every bone in his body stuck out and with his hollow cheeks and the black circles under his sagging eyes he looked like a zombie. Back then I didn't know what a zombie was but he scared the hell out of me.We could see in his window where he just laid in bed day after day. A woman would bring him soup and some bread, usually trying to soak the bread in the juice so he could eat it. Most of it dribbled down his chin. Then they'd clean him up and he'd just sit there usually staring into our window. I don't know why he did that. Maybe he enjoyed watching us play. I felt bad for him but he scared me. I couldn't shut the curtains anyway because we didn't have any. I just brought my little sister into the other room as there weren't too many places we could hide in a 2 room shack. Our bathroom was outside in an outhouse. It was always filthy and smelly. No one ever took care of it but it was far enough away from the house to where the smell didn't come in. I didn't like to go at night and would always try to hold it until the morning because it was so dark outside, but that night I couldn't. I drank a lot of water and had to go both really badly. I waited for Anna to go to sleep and then I ran to the outhouse. While I was sitting there I heard footsteps outside the bathroom. The steps circled around twice then stopped in front of the door. Suddenly, the door shook so hard
