Description
ParasitesJesse Smith was a pretty ordinary guy, living in a pretty ordinary town. Nothing much happened in his life; he went to work, came home, watched TV, and went to bed. Rinse and repeat. But one night, as he lay in bed staring at the ceiling, he heard it: a faint buzzing noise. He figured it was a fly or a mosquito. He swatted at the air around his head before rolling over and trying to get some sleep. But the buzzing didn’t stop. It was faint, like it was far away but somehow right inside his head. He pressed his fingers into his ears, trying to block it out, but it only got louder. It was a high-pitched, relentless drone that made his teeth ache and his skin crawl. Jesse sat up, shaking his head as if he could dislodge whatever was causing the noise.“Jesus, what is that?” he muttered. He crawled out of bed and paced the room for a few minutes before turning on the light. He made sure the windows shut. Then he opened one and looked around for anything that could be making the sound, but it was quiet outside. The room was still, except for that maddening buzz. It was coming from inside his head, he realized with a sinking feeling.Jesse tried to ignore it, figuring it would soon disappear, but it never did. Every morning the buzzing only got worse. It was there when he woke up, followed him to work, hummed in the background while he watched TV, and kept him awake at night. It exhausted him and made him irritable. He felt like he was losing his mind. The next morning Jesse stood staring at his face in the bathroom mirror. He hadn't had a good night's sleep in weeks. He noticed the looming dark circles under his eyes and a wild look on his face. He couldn’t take it anymore. The buzzing was driving him crazy. He needed to do something, anything, to make it stop.He tilted his head to the side, peering into his ear. It looked normal, but the noise was definitely coming from there. He grabbed a cotton swab and gently probed his ear, wincing as he felt something hard. Carefully, he pulled it out and stared at the small rock in his hand, bewildered.“What the hell?” he whispered, looking back into the mirror. There was more in there, he could feel it. He used the cotton swab to fish out another pebble, then another. His ear felt sore and raw, but the buzzing was still there. He couldn’t stop now. He had to get everything out.Over the next few days, Jesse’s routine became a grim ritual. It wasn't just rocks he was pulling from his ear canal. They were strange objects: tiny bugs, bits of paper, even a paperclip once. Each item made him more anxious, more desperate. The buzzing never stopped. He began keeping the objects in a small jar. How were these things getting into his ear? And why couldn’t he make the noise stop? It was the only way he was going to convince the doctor without people saying he was crazy. His friends and co-workers noticed something was wrong. They took him to lunch and told him that he was jumpy, irritable, and distracted. He tried to explain the buzzing, but no one seemed to understand or even believe him. They suggested he see a doctor, and after weeks of suffering, he finally agreed. The doctor’s office was quiet which made the sound even worse. Jesse sat nervously on the exam table as he explained his symptoms. He looked away from the doctor when he mentioned the strange objects he’d been pulling from his ear.The doctor listened and then examined Jesse’s ear. “Well, there’s nothing in there now,” he said, pulling back. “Everything looks perfectly normal.”Jesse’s heart sank. “But the noise… it’s still there!”The doctor frowned. “I don’t see any reason for it. It could be tinnitus, a common condition. Sometimes it’s caused by exposure to loud noises, stress, or even ear infections.”Jesse shook his head. “It’s not tinnitus. I’ve looked it up. This is different. It’s like there’s something in there, making the noise. And it doesn't explain why I keep pulling out debris from my head!" Jesse pulled the jar out of his bac
