Description

Welcome to AI Buddhism University! 🪷

Today, we're diving into one of the most thrilling mysteries and philosophical paradoxes in Buddhist history: the birth of "Tathagatagarbha" (Buddha-Nature).

Early Buddhism strictly taught the concept of "No-Self" (Anatman)—the idea that we don't have a fixed, eternal soul. But centuries later, Mahayana Buddhism suddenly started claiming, "Wait, actually... there is a pure, eternal Buddha hidden inside you!"

Did Buddhism copy Hinduism and Yoga philosophy? Was this the Buddha's ultimate "marketing strategy" to help people overcome their fear of emptiness? Join Ren and En as they unravel the ancient texts, from the Pabhassara Sutta to the Lankavatara Sutta, and discuss the modern "Critical Buddhism" debate that is still shaking the academic world today!

Shomon Akita

Jodo-shu (Pure Land Buddhism) Priest | 33rd Chief Priest of Guzeiin Temple | Buddhist Researcher (Ph.D. coursework at Aichi Gakuin University)

After graduating from Osaka University with a degree in French Literature, I worked as a judicial scrivener (a legal professional in Japan). However, just before turning 30, I made the life-changing decision to take over my family’s temple.

During my formal monk training, I began to question the rigid sectarianism often found in traditional Buddhism. This curiosity led me to knock on the door of a senior monk of Early (Theravada) Buddhism. Profoundly inspired by its highly rational philosophy, I traveled the world to deepen my practice, spending time at meditation centers in the UK, France, Myanmar, and Thailand.

Later, after completing traditional ascetic training at Chion-in Temple in Kyoto, I officially became a Jodo-shu priest. Today, I continue to explore Buddhism beyond borders and sects—from practicing Yoga in India to Nembutsu (chanting) asceticism at Mount Lu in China.
