Sam Houston: Contradictions & Conquests
Description
Sam Houston, the only individual to serve as both a congressman and governor for two different states, had a life filled with contradictions. Born in Virginia, he moved to Tennessee, served under Andrew Jackson, and became governor. However, personal issues led to his resignation. He then moved to Washington to represent the Cherokee Nation, but left after a street fight. Houston lived with the Cherokee, defended them, and owned enslaved people, yet opposed slaverys spread and fought against Texas secession. In Texas, he served as president, senator, and governor, but his anti-secession stance led to his ousting. He retired to his farm in Texas, dying there in 1863, buried with Jacksons words on his stone: the world will handle his fame.
