What Paul's Final Words Teach Us About Discipleship
Description
Discipleship is at the heart of what Paul left behind in his final letter, written from a Roman dungeon shortly before his execution. Johnny Wong walks through 2 Timothy 4 — Paul's last recorded words, passed to young Pastor Timothy — and draws out three priorities that shaped everything Paul cared about at the very end of his life.
The first is the Word: Paul's charge to "preach the word" and be "thoroughly equipped," which Wong ties to the discipline of memorizing and rightly dividing Scripture, illustrated through the story of Bible translator William Tyndale, who asked for a Hebrew Bible from his own prison cell. The second is the team — Paul names 17 people in this one short passage, showing that even the apostle to the Gentiles never did ministry solo. Wong connects this to why Gateway Church is built around care groups rather than departments, tracing the church's own discipleship history back to a handful of young people in 1998. The third priority, impact, is what happens when the first two are in place — not something a person can manufacture on their own.
Wong closes with a personal story about his aunt, who discipled him as a child and kept him in the Word until her final morning, tying Paul's ancient priorities directly to what it looks like to pass on faith to the next generation today.
Presented by Johnny Wong at Gateway Seventh-day Adventist Church, Melbourne, Australia.
