Description

Welcome back to AI Buddhism University! 🎓✨ In this episode, Ren and En dive into the mind-blowing and tragic life of Yunqi Zhuhong (Master Lianchi), a superstar of Ming Dynasty Chinese Buddhism.

Imagine losing your parents, your wife, and your child back-to-back. How do you survive that level of grief? Master Lianchi used it to find ultimate enlightenment. We’ll explore his insane journey from doing a "hardcore DIY survival build" in a ruined, tiger-infested mountain, to accidentally founding a massive, thriving monastery. 🐅🏔️

But that's not all—we break down his absolute masterpiece: the Amitabha Sutra Shuchao. Discover how the simple act of chanting (Nembutsu) isn't just a basic practice, but a profound "cosmic cheat code" that connects you directly to the quantum-level philosophy of the Avatamsaka Sutra (Shi Shi Wu Ai). 🌌

Whether you're here for the epic history, the deep mindfulness, or just En's modern-day analogies, this is an episode you don't want to miss!

Shomon Akita

Jodo-shu (Pure Land Buddhism) Priest | 33rd Chief Priest of Guzeiin Temple | Buddhist Researcher (Completed Ph.D. coursework at Aichi Gakuin University)

After graduating from Osaka University with a degree in French Literature, I worked as a judicial scrivener (a legal professional in Japan). However, just before turning 30, I made the life-changing decision to take over my family’s temple.

During my formal monk training, I began to question the rigid sectarianism often found in traditional Buddhism. This curiosity led me to knock on the door of a senior monk of Early (Theravada) Buddhism. Profoundly inspired by its highly rational philosophy, I traveled the world to deepen my practice, spending time at meditation centers in the UK, France, Myanmar, and Thailand.

Later, after completing traditional ascetic training at Chion-in Temple in Kyoto, I officially became a Jodo-shu priest. Today, I continue to explore Buddhism beyond borders and sects—from practicing Yoga in India to Nembutsu (chanting) asceticism at Mount Lu in China.
