Description

Did you know that one of the greatest masters in Buddhist history was once sentenced to death for embezzling government funds? 🤯

Welcome to AI Buddhism University! In today's episode, your hosts Ren and En dive into the epic, unbelievable life of Yongming Yanshou (永明延寿). Before he became a legendary Buddhist master, he was a government official who secretly used tax money to buy and release captive animals. When caught and sent to the execution grounds, his reaction shocked the King so much that he was pardoned!

But the wild story doesn't end there. We’ll explore how he went on to complete a superhuman routine of 108 practices a day and achieved the impossible: perfectly merging two rival philosophies, Zen and Pure Land Buddhism. Discover why he described this ultimate spiritual state as a "Tiger with Horns"! 🐅🐉

Jodo-shu (Pure Land Buddhism) Priest | 33rd Chief Priest of Guzeiin Temple | Buddhist Researcher (Completed Ph.D. coursework at Aichi Gakuin University)

After graduating from Osaka University with a degree in French Literature, I worked as a judicial scrivener (a legal professional in Japan). However, just before turning 30, I made the life-changing decision to take over my family’s temple.

During my formal monk training, I began to question the rigid sectarianism often found in traditional Buddhism. This curiosity led me to knock on the door of a senior monk of Early (Theravada) Buddhism. Profoundly inspired by its highly rational philosophy, I traveled the world to deepen my practice, spending time at meditation centers in the UK, France, Myanmar, and Thailand.

Later, after completing traditional ascetic training at Chion-in Temple in Kyoto, I officially became a Jodo-shu priest. Today, I continue to explore Buddhism beyond borders and sects—from practicing Yoga in India to Nembutsu (chanting) asceticism at Mount Lu in China.
