When Salvation Isn’t What We Thought

Sometimes we hear the word “salvation”—

and we’re not quite sure what it means.

Saved from what,

saved for what,

and how it actually takes shape in a life.

“Like newborn infants, long for the pure, spiritual milk,

so that by it you may grow into salvation—”

(1 Peter 2:2)

In this passage, salvation isn’t described as a moment we arrive at—

but something we grow into.

The Greek word sōtēria carries the sense of being made whole,

being preserved,

being sustained.

And the word translated “grow” suggests an ongoing process—

something unfolding over time.

Even the word “long” points to participation—

something we don’t just receive,

but reach toward.

And then Peter shifts the image.

From individuals—

to something being built together.

Living stones,

formed into a dwelling.

Salvation, in this sense,

is not just rescue from something—

it is a process of being made whole,

as we are drawn into a new way of living together in the world.
