Catechesis – Judas and St Matthias – Fr Peter George Flynn OFM

Published 2 weeks, 1 day ago
Description

Fr Peter George Flynn begins a series on the Acts of the Apostles for the Easter season, written by St. Luke as a sequel to his Gospel for Theophilus — “lover of God,” a mysterious figure Fr Peter examines. He reads the opening chapter closely: the forty days of resurrection appearances, the promise of the Holy Spirit, the Ascension watched from Olivet, and Our Lady praying in the upper room for her last named appearance in Scripture. The bulk of the episode treats the election of Matthias — “the third twelfth apostle,” after Judas and St. Paul — and takes the question of Judas seriously: the Church has never definitively pronounced on his fate not because it is uncertain, but because the matter has not been formally disputed; prophecy does not compel its fulfilment; and God had a plan for Judas as for Matthias, one of whom followed it and one did not.
