Description
Rebecca speaks with Fr. Laurence (La) Flynn, prior of Station Island, as Lough Derg prepares to open for the 2026 season. The conversation ranges across fifteen centuries of history — from St. Davog, the Welsh disciple of Patrick who founded the original monastery, to the medieval pilgrim who made his will before crossing the lake, to the Franciscans celebrating Mass in secret during the Penal Laws, emerging each summer for the ten-week pilgrimage season. Fr. La also describes what is changing: a noticeable rise in young men in their twenties and thirties crossing the water to step away from their phones and find the space to hear what God might actually have in mind for them. One-day retreats begin in May; the three-day pilgrimage, bare feet and all, runs from June. Details and booking at loughderg.org.
