Description
Carmela welcomes Joe Flanagan, a numerary member of Opus Dei for 53 years, who traces a journey from Mayo to UCG to a chance encounter on the Galway campus that changed his life. He speaks about running Opus Dei centres, bringing students to Russia and Albania, 27 years teaching English and religion at Rockbrook Park School in Dublin, and what the Kerry educationalist Brian MacMahon taught him: that teaching is telling stories. He reflects on meeting Pope John Paul II twice — once just weeks before the assassination attempt — and on his move to Belfast in 2019, where he finds the practice of faith among young people and families striking compared to what he sees in the south. He describes Opus Dei’s work in Belfast, including the youth faith initiative Recharge at St. Colmcille’s, Ballyhackamore, where the Bishop of Down and Connor is due to speak on 5th May.
