Catechesis – Communal Life of the Early Church – Fr Peter George Flynn OFM

Published 1 week, 5 days ago
Description

Fr. Peter George Flynn opens with a close reading of the communal life of the early church, distinguishing it firmly from Marxist communism: Barnabas gave freely and was praised for it precisely because he was not obliged to. Then comes the story of Ananias and Sapphira — who did give, but lied about the amount. Fr. Peter unpacks the sin involved: not keeping some of the money, which Peter explicitly says was theirs to keep, but presumption, envy of Barnabas’s merit, and above all a lie to the Holy Spirit.

He takes Sapphira’s death seriously as a question of individual moral accountability — drawing on a memorable Mr. Bumble aside — before closing with joyful news: Coimisiún na Meán has just renewed Radio Maria Ireland’s broadcasting licence for another ten years, keeping the station on Saorview until 2036, with national DAB coverage on the horizon. The cost of both is €40,000; listeners are invited to respond with something of Barnabas’s spirit.
