It was the deadliest mass shooting in modern Australian history.

Victims and dignitaries will gather at the historic Port Arthur site in Tasmania today to mark 30 years since the massacre - when a gunman shot dead 35 people.

In the days and weeks after the tragedy, the then-prime minister John Howard pushed through tough new gun control measures.
