When We Cover Our Ears

Sometimes we don’t want to hear it.

Sometimes we just aren’t ready.

“But they covered their ears, and with a loud shout all rushed together against him.”

— Acts 7:57

It wasn’t about the character of the messenger.

Stephen was a good person by all accounts.

It wasn’t about the truth of the message.

Stephen was courageously bearing witness to what he had seen and understood.

But some messages are harder to receive than others.

Some messages ask us to change how we think.

Others ask us to change how we respond.

Sometimes we are comfortable where we are.

Sometimes we are afraid to uncover our ears.

And before we can respond faithfully,

we are first invited to have the courage to hear.

To listen long enough

for the meaning to sink in.

To stay open long enough

for love to change us.
