While she’s a child, Sophie’s sister, mother and brother all die, leading to her fear of death. To placate God she goes to church and prays often as a teenager. She meets Nick but is afraid to marry him until he converts to her church. When their daughter is born, Sophie becomes even more fearful. Even when they go out with friends to party, the fears haunt her. She hears a radio preacher and prays for salvation, then talks with a neighbor who has been praying for her. At first Nick is upset with the change in her, but after several accidents, he professes faith, too. No longer afraid of death, Sophie witnesses in the hospital
