John’s mother dies and his mean stepmother beats him so he runs away at nine, linking up with Steve, a hobo who teaches him to drink. At thirteen John goes it alone till age 17 when loneliness drives him to his dad, an alcoholic who rejects him. John spends 28 years on Skid Row in Chicago, till he comes to Pacific Garden Mission where he’s saved.
