What Brings Us Together
“Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people.” (from 1 Peter 2:10)
Sometimes we find ourselves next to people
we’re not sure how to relate to—
unsure what we share,
or where we fit.
We live in a time of deep suspicion and mistrust.
We find ourselves divided by age, race, gender, nationality, class, identity and more.
This is not new.
Those living in the first century experienced these same divisions—and more.
But they also experienced something else.
In the presence of God’s love,
they discovered a belonging they hadn’t known before.
They belonged.
And they began to recognize that others belonged too—
people they never imagined.
Their differences were not erased,
but the divisions were.
They all belonged.
And in that belonging,
they found themselves becoming a people together.
We become a people
when we begin to recognize
that we all belong.
