What Does Hunger and Thirst After Righteousness Mean? Matthew 5:6-8 | Sermon on the Mount
Season 3
Episode 2
Published 5 months, 3 weeks ago
Description
What does it mean to "hunger and thirst after righteousness" in Matthew 5:6-8 (KJV)? It is His righteousness, not ours, and the same heart is merciful and pure and sees God.
Sermon on the Mount Pt 2, hosted by Matt Hepner and TopLobsta.
Verse 6: people who hunger and thirst have a sense of adventure, like Abraham leaving Ur of the Chaldees. The righteousness they want is His, not theirs: "seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness" (Matthew 6:33; Psalm 143; John 6:35; 2 Corinthians 5:21; Philippians 3:9).
Verse 7: "Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy," through the parable of the unforgiving servant (Matthew 18:21-35). Jesus "knew what was in man" (John 2:25) and still thought us worth dying for.
Verse 8: "Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God." It is not the people with letters behind their names who see God. It is the single eye (Matthew 6:22), not closed eyes (Matthew 13:10-17), and "where your treasure is, there will your heart be also" (Matthew 6:21).
