Nick Koeppel welcomes Vanessa Machado, a nurse from Lisbon who left hospital practice to work full-time teaching the Creighton Model Fertility Care System [NaproTechnology]. Vanessa traces her journey — encountering Dr Phil Boyle’s work at a Theology of the Body symposium, training in Galway when a benefactor unexpectedly provided the funds — and now working with couples across the range of family planning needs as well as infertility and miscarriage.

She explains the important distinction between fertility awareness (which uses contraception as a backup) and natural family planning (which works with the body’s natural signs), and the difference between spacing pregnancies and healing infertility through Napro rather than IVF. She speaks of non-Catholic couples discovering the method and reporting that their wives feel restored to themselves after coming off the pill.
