RM Breakfast Show – Doubting Your Doubts – Fr Billy Swan

Published 3 weeks ago
Description

Fr. Billy Swan presents from Rome, reflecting on Divine Mercy Sunday and the record numbers received into the Church at Easter — nearly 130 catechumens in Dublin alone, a 37% jump in Fort Worth, Texas, and 94% in Venice, Florida. He takes Thomas’s encounter with the risen Lord as a lens for understanding this phenomenon: just as Jesus met Thomas’s doubts head on, many people today are beginning to doubt their doubts and look again at faith, finding in the resurrection an unshakeable source of hope in a troubled world.

The second half turns to John the Beloved Disciple — the one apostle who stayed at the foot of the cross and the only one not martyred — and his central insight that “God is love” and that we love because he loved us first. Fr. Billy contrasts purely human love, which is calculated and conditional, with Christ’s love poured out through the Holy Spirit, and explores what it means to rest against the Lord’s breast as John did at the Last Supper. He closes with Karl Barth’s famous reply — “Jesus loves me” — as the most important theological insight of a lifetime, and with the image of prayer as the place where we receive the Father’s words: “This is my beloved son, my beloved daughter, in whom I am well pleased.”
