Description
Fr. Darren Brennan answers Charlie, who is writing on behalf of his baby brother, asking what happens at baptism. Fr. Darren explains that the word “baptism” literally means to be plunged into water, describes the outward sign of water poured three times with the Trinitarian formula, and then unpacks three things that happen invisibly.
First, original sin is washed away — not a sin the baby committed, but the inherited wound from Adam and Eve that leaves us born unable to have a close relationship with God. Second, we are filled with the Holy Spirit: Fr. Darren offers the image of a dark, cold, lonely room where someone suddenly opens the curtains and sunlight floods in. Third, we become children of God and members of his family the Church, able to say not merely “You are my Creator” but “Our Father.” He closes by saying that as a priest he still discovers something new about his own baptism every day, and invites all listeners to pause and give thanks for the gift of theirs.
