Honoring Bay of Pigs Heroes: A Tribute to Fallen Airmen
Description
In 1961, four Alabama airmen from the one hundred seventeenth Reconnaissance Wing lost their lives in the Bay of Pigs mission. Leo Baker, Wade Gray, Pete Ray, and Riley Shamburger were part of a secret CIA operation to overthrow Fidel Castros regime in Cuba. Despite their training of Cuban exile pilots in Nicaragua, the mission failed, with Cuban forces shooting down all their planes in just two days. The CIA remained silent for over twenty years, leaving the families in the dark. Since 2012, the one hundred seventeenth Air Refueling Wing has honored them annually at Pete Rays gravesite. This Tuesday, the one hundred sixth Air Refueling Squadron and the Southern Museum of Flight will pay tribute to these airmens courage.
