443 Million Hours of Data: AI Is Fragmenting Focus, Not Freeing It
Published 2 months, 3 weeks ago
Description
ActivTrak's 2026 State of the Workplace report analyzed 443 million hours of actual work activity across more than 160,000 employees at 1,100 companies — and the findings should give every HR leader pause. AI tools are fragmenting focus, not freeing it. Focus efficiency has fallen to 60%, a three-year low. The average focus session is now just 13 minutes and 7 seconds, down 9% since 2023.
Post-AI adoption, email time surged 104% and chat time doubled. And only 3% of workers have found the AI usage level that actually improves their output. Everyone else is either under-using AI or drowning in new context-switching overhead.
This episode breaks down what the data shows, what the sweet spot actually looks like, and what HR teams need to build into their AI rollout strategy to protect deep focus time before productivity gains disappear.
