Everyone knows the YMCA.
Few people have actually thought about it.
This week on 1001 Songs That Make You Want To Die, we dive into one of the most recognisable songs ever written — and unpack what’s really going on beneath the disco surface.
We get into the story behind Village People, how the song came together, and why it became a global anthem despite never hitting #1 in the US.
Along the way, we break down the lyrics, the cultural impact, and the interpretations that have followed the song for decades.
And of course, we settle the only question that actually matters…
Could you beat the Village People in a fight?
