RM Breakfast Show – The Easter Revolution – Fr Billy Swan

Published 4 weeks ago
Description

Fr. Billy Swan presents the Breakfast Show live from Wexford, home for Easter, and opens with a sustained reflection on the resurrection as a spiritual revolution — not a symbol of values, but a shattering historical event on which everything else stands or falls. He pushes back against what he calls the “domestication” of the Easter message, illustrated by David Cameron’s 2016 Easter address which reduced it to civic virtues, and argues that the Irish Church needs to recover the apostolic boldness of the early martyrs.

He images the empty tomb as the pin pulled from a hand grenade, and shows how Jesus burst out of every human category long before the resurrection. In the second half he turns to Mary of Magdalene, correcting the unfair reputation she acquired in Western Christianity and offering a rich theological reflection on demonic possession as the fracturing of the self, restored by Christ’s mercy; on the questions “why are you weeping?” and “who are you looking for?” as addressed to each of us; and on Pope Francis’s elevation of her feast day as a call to reflect on the dignity of women and the mystery of divine mercy. Listener texts on Nigeria, Pope Leo XIV and the Iran ceasefire are also addressed.
