Gospel Tidings – Divine Mercy Sunday: Thomas, Peace and the Forgiveness of Sins – Mary Hooton and Fr Eamonn

Published 3 weeks, 5 days ago
Description

Mary Hooton and Fr. Eamonn McCarthy reflect on the Gospel for Divine Mercy Sunday (John 20:19–31), opening with a reminder of the extraordinary graces available through the Divine Mercy novena and confession before the feast. Fr. Eamonn maps the passage within John’s Gospel as a whole — tracing the journey from the Prologue through Cana, Nicodemus, the Woman at the Well, the Man Born Blind, the Last Supper and the Passion to this culminating moment of resurrection appearance.

He reflects on Thomas not as a figure of weakness but as one who stands in our place, bridging doubt and faith, and whose demand for tangible proof makes the Lord’s words “blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe” a gift to every subsequent generation. Mary draws out the repeated greeting of peace (Jesus’s first word to the traumatised disciples in the upper room) and the commissioning to forgive sins as the other side of the Holy Thursday institution of the Eucharist: together they constitute the foundations of the Church’s sacramental life. Fr. Eamonn reflects on the silent presence of Our Lady holding the newborn Church together in those days, and both close with an invitation to let the power of the resurrection and the Eucharist animate courage, joy and zeal.
