Geelong oil refinery inferno threatens fuel supply
Published 1 week ago
Description
A major fire broke out at the Viva Energy oil refinery in Geelong, Victoria, caused by equipment failure following a small gas leak. The refinery, which supplies approximately 50% of Victoria's fuel and 10% of Australia's fuel, producing around 120,000 barrels daily, experienced a ferocious blaze that required 50 firefighters and led to the evacuation of 50 workers. The incident has raised serious concerns about fuel supply shortages and price increases across Australia, with production of petrol, high octane petrol, diesel and jet fuel being impacted.
