Description
When We Suffer Unfairly
Sometimes something happens to us
that we didn’t choose,
didn’t cause,
and wouldn’t have wanted.
And we’re left trying to make sense of it.
“For it is a commendable thing if, being aware of God, a person endures pain while suffering unjustly.”
(from 1 Peter 2:19)
1 Peter doesn’t welcome suffering—but it does recognize it.
And it speaks to those moments
when what we’re carrying
is not something we created.
What do we do then?
The writer suggests two things:
That we name it clearly.
And that we remain aware of God’s presence with us.
We want to be responsible for our lives.
But we are not responsible for everything that happens to us.
We are responsible for how we respond.
And when that response is shaped
by the awareness that we are not alone—
that there is a presence with us
even in the darkest valley,
that it prepares a table even in the most difficult places.
Then suffering does not have the final word.
Hope does.
Because our hope is anchored
in something far greater than ourselves.
I’m Horace McMillon. This is 60 Seconds of Hope. Peace be with you.
