Good morning everyone, this is your New York surf zone forecast for Sunday, September 28th, brought to you by the National Weather Service.
Well folks, this is it. The last surf forecast of the year, and Mother Nature is sending us off with some pretty pleasant conditions across our beaches. Let's break down what's happening from Brooklyn all the way out to the eastern tip of Long Island.
Starting with Kings County, including Coney Island and Manhattan Beach, we're looking at low rip current risk today with surf hovering around two feet. You'll want to grab your sunglasses because it's mostly cloudy until 9 AM, then the sun takes over for the rest of the day. Temperatures will climb into the upper 70s with gentle south winds around 5 miles per hour. The water is sitting in the lower 70s, which is actually pretty comfortable for late September. High tide at Coney Island comes at 12:39 PM.
Moving over to Southern Queens and the Rockaway beaches, conditions remain calm with low rip current risk and two-foot surf. It's partly sunny until noon, then full sunshine takes over. We're looking at mid-70s for the high temperature with southeast winds around 5 miles per hour shifting south in the afternoon. East Rockaway Inlet will experience a low tide at 6:06 AM followed by high tide at 12:36 PM. The water temperature here is also in the lower 70s.
Down in Southern Nassau, the beaches at Atlantic Beach, Long Beach, Lido Beach, and Jones Beach will see partly sunny skies until 1 PM, then clearing to sunny conditions. Same low rip current risk and two-foot surf throughout the day. South to southwest winds will be light around 5 miles per hour, and high tide at Jones Inlet occurs at 12:23 PM. Temperatures in the mid-70s make this an ideal beach day.
Heading further east to Southwestern Suffolk, including Gilgo and Robert Moses State Parks, expect mostly cloudy conditions until noon before the sun breaks through. Again, low rip current risk with two-foot surf and mid-70s temperatures. Winds start out of the east at 5 miles per hour and swing to the southwest as the day progresses. Fire Island Inlet will reach high tide at 12:04 PM. Water temperatures here drop slightly to right around 70 degrees.
Finally, out in Southeastern Suffolk at Smith Point, Cupsogue Beach, and the Ditch Plains area, we see mostly cloudy skies until 1 PM before sunny skies dominate. Low rip current risk and two-foot surf continue. Mid-70s for the high temperature with light southeast winds becoming southwest. The water temperature is in the upper 60s, so you might want to consider a spring suit if you're heading out for a long session. Shinnecock Inlet reaches high tide at 12:31 PM.
Across the entire region, moderate UV index means you'll want to apply sunscreen. No thunderstorm potential anywhere today, and the moderate rip current risk reminder applies everywhere even though conditions support low risk currently.
