Federal government backs separate WA fuel supply | ABC News Top Stories

Description

US President Donald Trump's ordered a blockade on the Strait of Hormuz, after talks to end the US war with Iran collapsed.

Iran's been controlling the key oil shipping route, and Donald Trump now says his military will stop ships moving through it.

The US defence department says it'll target traffic through Iranian ports but won't stop other vessels moving through.

Iran says it'll retaliate if military vessels approach.

As the war continues to disrupt fuel supplies, the federal government's backed Western Australia's plan to maintain its own diesel reserve, separate from the national stockpile.

The WA Government announced yesterday it was considering acquiring an unstated amount of diesel, saying the size of the state means it needs more fuel for trucks and generators in remote towns.

Federal Resources Minister Madeleine King says it's a proactive approach.

And the AFL's first openly bisexual man says the queer community cops homophobic abuse when cases like the one involving St Kilda's Lance Collard make headlines.

Collard was found guilty of using a homophobic slur against an opponent, and is awaiting a decision about his future.

Former AFL player and LGBTQ advocate Mitch Brown says he sees a rise in homophobic commentary on social media whenever issues like this make the news.
