Government defends fuel saving ad campaign | ABC News Top Stories

Description

The war in the Middle East shows little signs of stopping, with Donald Trump ordering a blockade of the Strait of Hormuz after peace talks with Iran collapsed.

Iran's been controlling the key oil shipping route, and Mr Trump's demanded it be opened.

The US and Iran reached a fragile two week ceasefire last week, but fresh talks to end the war failed...and President Trump's now vowed to stop any ships moving through the channel, while Iran's threatened to retaliate if the US goes ahead with a blockade.

Iran also wants to put tolls on ships heading through the strait - a move Australia's resources minister Madeline King says is not sustainable.

The failed peace talks also mean there's been no breakthrough for a ceasefire in Lebanon.

The country's health ministry says more than Israeli strikes have killed more than two-thousand since the 2nd of March.

That includes 165 children, 250 women and 85 medics.

Israeli and Lebanese officials are planning ceasefire talks in the U-S on Tuesday.

And as conflict in the Middle East continues to disrupt fuel supply, the federal government's defending a new ad campaign encouraging people to save petrol.

The opposition has slammed the $20 million campaign, but the government says it's important to combat misinformation about the fuel crisis.

It comes as Anthony Albanese prepares to head to Asia again this week in a bid to sure up supply.
