Published 1 week, 5 days ago
Description
On April 4, near North Academy Boulevard and East San Miguel Street, a Metro Task Force observed a suspicious vehicle with an adult male driver known to law enforcement and an adult female passenger. The driver attempted to flee, fired at officers after the vehicle high-centered, and was shot by three Colorado Springs Police Department officers. The 40-year-old male suspect died from injuries; El Paso County Sheriff's Office leads the ongoing officer-involved shooting investigation. The female passenger was arrested on an unrelated warrant; her involvement under investigation. CSPD officers on administrative leave.
Earlier that week, Colorado Springs police responded to violent attacks, domestic disputes, and other incidents countywide, resulting in 347 arrests, according to the Gazette.
The man killed in the North Academy shooting was linked to a March arson investigation, per KRDO reports.
In a separate incident at the Nevada Flats hotel, Officer Austin Hornberger shot toward a man who raised an assault-style BB gun, wounding two people. The 4th Judicial District DA ruled the shooting justified.
Colorado Springs Police notified the community of a sexually violent predator, 34-year-old Dustin Cole Rottinghaus, convicted in 2017 of sexual assault on a child, now on unsupervised release. Police seek public assistance with information; contact Detective J.R. Brown at (719)444-7672.
Significant trends include officer-involved shootings and a high volume of arrests amid violent attacks and domestic disputes.
For tips, call CSPD non-emergency at (719)444-7000 or Crime Stoppers at (719)634-STOP.
