Texas Gov. Greg Abbott is threatening to remove Democratic lawmakers from office after they fled the state to protest new congressional maps designed to give President Donald Trump five additional GOP seats before the 2026 midterms. The lawmakers, now in Illinois and New York, face $500-per-day fines as Abbott cites a 2021 legal opinion to potentially vacate their seats. Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker calls it a nationwide attempt to rig the system.
