On Aug. 22, 1989, Black Panther Party co-founder Huey P. Newton was shot and killed in Oakland, California. From co-founding the Panthers in 1966 to earning a doctorate in 1980, Newton’s influence and vision shaped civil rights and social justice movements. His ideas continue to inspire activists fighting for equality today.
