Donny Hathaway, born Oct. 1, 1945, in Chicago, became one of the most influential soul voices of the 20th century. From his Grammy-winning collaborations with Roberta Flack to writing the holiday classic “This Christmas,” Hathaway’s music remains timeless. Despite his brilliance, he struggled with mental illness and died by suicide in 1979 at only 33 years old. We remember his life, music, and enduring legacy.
