Description
On this day in 1870, Hiram Rhodes Revels became the first Black man to serve in the United States Senate. Representing Mississippi during Reconstruction, Revels overcame resistance and constitutional challenges before going on to serve as president of Alcorn Agricultural and Mechanical College.
