Published 2 weeks, 1 day ago
Description
Good morning, this is your New York surf zone forecast for Sunday, September 28th, 2025, brought to you by the National Weather Service.
It's the last forecast of the year, and we're looking at a beautiful day across all our beaches from Brooklyn out to the East End of Long Island. So here's what you need to know before you head to the shore.
Starting with the conditions, we've got consistent small surf around two feet everywhere you go today. Rip currents are at low risk across the board, so swimmers and surfers won't have to worry too much about strong offshore pulls. However, always remember that life-threatening rip currents can pop up anywhere near groins, jetties, reefs, and piers, so stay alert.
Let's talk about the weather. We're looking at a partly cloudy morning that clears out to sunny skies by midday. The exact timing varies slightly depending on where you are. Brooklyn will see mostly cloudy conditions until about 9 AM, while the Rockaways and Jones Beach stay partly sunny until around noon or 1 PM. The Eastern Suffolk beaches will hang onto clouds a bit longer, clearing by early afternoon.
Temperatures will be pleasant, topping out in the mid to upper seventies across most areas, with Brooklyn slightly warmer in the upper seventies. It'll feel pretty mild for a late September day. The water temperature ranges from the upper sixties out east to the lower seventies in Brooklyn and Queens, so you might want a light wetsuit depending on how much time you're spending in the water.
Winds are light and variable, starting from the southeast at around five miles per hour in the morning and shifting to the southwest in the afternoon. These light breezes mean glassy conditions, especially early in the day.
High tides are coming around midday, with Coney Island seeing its high at 12:39 PM and most of the other inlets hitting their peaks between noon and 12:36 PM. If you're planning to check out the sunrise, you're looking at times between 6:41 and 6:48 AM depending on your location, with sunset coming around 6:37 to 6:45 PM.
UV levels are moderate, so don't forget your sunscreen even though we're heading into fall. The moderate risk means those rays can still do some damage with prolonged exposure.
Bottom line, this is a great beach day. Low risk across all zones, small manageable surf, and beautiful clear skies. Perfect for swimming, wading, or just enjoying the shore as we close out the forecasting season. Just remember to swim near a lifeguard and enjoy responsibly.
That's your New York surf zone forecast. Stay safe and have a great day at the beach.
