Description
Fr. Peter George Flynn presents an Easter Saturday special for children, exploring the rich tradition of animals as symbols of Christ’s death and resurrection. With brothers Daniel (aged nine) and Pablo (aged seven), he works through the pelican whose legendary self-sacrifice prefigures Christ’s shedding of blood; the goldfinch, said to have pulled thorns from the crown of thorns and marked with a red face ever since; the otter swallowed by the crocodile of death; the frog, snail and swallow as symbols of burial and new life; the butterfly emerging from the chrysalis; the peacock in its resurrection glory; the phoenix rising from ashes; and finally the lion and the lamb. The boys’ asides on axolotls, Daniel in the lions’ den, and the four evangelists make this one of the most joyful exchanges of the season.
