When It’s Hard to Believe Things Can Be Different

“While in their joy they were still disbelieving…” (from Gospel of Luke 24:41)

Sometimes we want to believe things can get better—

but part of us holds back.

Not because we don’t see the signs.

Not because there isn’t reason for hope.

But because we’ve been disappointed before.

The disciples were experiencing something they had longed for—

and still, they struggled to believe it.

Joy was there.

But so was everything they had been through.

And we know that place.

When our hopes have been dashed,

when we’ve been let down enough times,

we learn to be careful.

Careful with what we expect.

Careful with what we allow ourselves to believe.

Not because we don’t want good things—

but because we don’t want to be hurt again.

And so even when something has changed,

even when there is evidence in front of us—

it can take time

for our minds to catch up.

It is not about forcing ourselves to believe.

It’s about allowing ourselves

to trust what is already happening.
