Catechesis – Calvary and Laodicea: The Conclusion of the Seven Churches – Fr Peter George Flynn OFM

Published 1 month ago
Description

Fr. Peter George Flynn brings his Lenten series on the seven places of the Passion to its conclusion on Holy Thursday eve. Today’s station is Calvary itself, and he opens with a rich meditation on the skull-shaped rock outside Jerusalem, the tradition that Adam was buried there, the earthquake that shattered it at three o’clock on Good Friday, and the archaeological story of how Empress Helena uncovered the site of the crucifixion from beneath Hadrian’s temple to Venus. He also describes the beautiful Polish tradition of the Grób Pański, the elaborate sepulchres built in churches across Krakow for adoration from Good Friday to Easter Saturday. The episode closes with the seventh and final letter from the Book of Revelation, to the lukewarm church at Laodicea, and our Lord’s luminous promise: behold I stand at the gate and knock.
