Catechesis – Pontius Pilate and the Church in Philadelphia – Fr Peter George Flynn OFM

Published 1 month ago
Description

Fr. Peter George Flynn continues his Holy Week series on the seven places of the Passion, this time arriving at the palace of Pontius Pilate. He introduces Pilate through his archaeological footprint: the Caesarea Maritima inscription, his bronze coins, and the copper alloy ring discovered at the Herodium bearing his name, and reflects on what it means that he is one of only three historical figures named in the Creed.

Reading the Passion account from St. Luke, he follows our Lord through the trial, the release of Barabbas, and the scourging, and pauses for a vivid account of the arch-confraternity of the Good Death in Krakow and their ancient privilege of releasing a condemned prisoner on Good Friday. He then draws a rich series of parallels between Pilate’s palace and the letter to the faithful Church of Philadelphia in the Book of Revelation: the crown, the pillar, and the promise that those who have been sent out to suffer will one day go out no more.
