Catechesis – Herod and the Church of Sardis – Fr Peter George Flynn OFM

Published 1 month ago
Description

Fr. Peter George Flynn continues his Holy Week series on the seven churches, tracing our Lord’s journey through the stations of his Passion. Today’s focus is the court of Herod Antipas, the tetrarch of Galilee responsible for the beheading of John the Baptist, whose guilt about that act colours his every encounter with Jesus. Fr. Peter sketches Herod’s history in colourful detail, from the machinations of his wife Herodias and her daughter Salome to his eventual exile in France, and explores why our Lord remained silent before him.

He then draws the parallel to the Church in Sardis from the Book of Revelation, whose members have the name of being alive but are dead, and reflects on the white robe of baptism as the garment we must keep clean if we are to walk with the Lord. Along the way, listeners are introduced to the plenary indulgence available for singing the Pange Lingua during the Holy Thursday procession to the altar of repose.
