Description
Fr. Adrian Crowley is joined by Patrick O’Neill, a Dubliner who spent twenty years drinking in England before getting sober at 37 through a twelve-step programme. Patrick speaks frankly about the emotional difficulties of his teenage years, the diminishing returns of addiction, the honesty and humility that twelve-step asks of its members, and how he has been off all prescribed medication for several years.
He reflects on his gradual return to the Catholic Church via an Alpha course in a Church of England parish in Stockport, the healing he found in the Eucharist, and the resonance of the Psalms with his own experience of darkness and recovery. He also shares the story of his aunt, Sr Eileen McLaughlin, who spent years as a missionary teacher in Kenya. Fr Crowley adds his own memories of heroic Irish missionary sisters in Liberia and Peru, including Sr Joan Sawyer who died in a prison riot in Lima. Patrick is celebrating twenty-five years of sobriety in April.
