A three-week police operation has been launched on Chapel Street in Melbourne following multiple firebombings, knife fights and shootings in recent months. Specialist units including sniffer dogs, mounted police and drug detectives are targeting antisocial behaviour, drug offences and retail theft across the precinct. Police recorded around 100 drug and weapon-related offences in the area over the past year, though retail crime has dropped by 7 per cent with 270 offenders arrested for theft.
