The couple utilized the fetish website FetLife to create a fraudulent profile, eventually catfishing an innocent man named Joseph Ryan into a staged home-invasion scenario. Their goal was to frame Ryan for the murder of Banfield’s wife, Christine, allowing the lovers to start a new life together while avoiding a costly divorce. Although they initially claimed the shootings were acts of self-defense, digital forensics and testimony from the au pair eventually exposed the elaborate plot. The legal proceedings concluded with life imprisonment for Banfield and a ten-year sentence for Magalhães for their roles in the tragedy.
