This is the second lesson in la historia de Ingrid. Follow a family from Guatemala through a difficult diagnosis – and learn the vocabulary and phrases for diagnosing leukemia in Spanish.

Luis takes Ingrid to a hospital in Santiago. Blood work, X-rays, and other studies are performed over a couple of days. Fortunately, a hematologist who visits once a week arrives the following day. The hematologist reviews all results and delivers the diagnosis directly: ‘Su esposa tiene un 90% de padecer leucemia.’ They are referred urgently to the Hospital Nacional in Guatemala City. Before they leave, the general practitioner meets with them privately to help them understand the gravity of the news. The first moment Luis truly registers the magnitude of what was happening.

🟣 Los exámenes en el hospital de Santiago

Luis: A la mañana siguiente, muy temprano, fuimos a Santiago y llegamos. A ella le hicieron algunos exámenes: exámenes de sangre, de pulmones, completo.

Molly: ¿Tienen tomografía allí o solo radiografía?

Luis: Pienso que radiografía, sí.

Molly: ¿Como placas?

Luis: Exacto. Eso ya fue el martes, porque era como al día siguiente. Fuimos y llegamos, le explicamos al doctor qué había pasado y el doctor hizo algunos exámenes y dijo: “Mañana hay otros exámenes que necesitamos hacer, pero por ahora puedes tomar esto y no tomes nada más que lo que yo te voy a dar.” Regresamos el martes y mis suegros me preguntaron qué había pasado. Les explicamos. Regresamos el miércoles al hospital y el doctor hizo otros exámenes. Otros doctores hicieron otros exámenes. Y, justamente, los jueves, según ellos, llegaba un hematólogo — era solo un día cada semana y los jueves.
