On this day, Clara McBride Hale, later known as “Mother Hale,” was born in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. After personal hardship and years of supporting her family through domestic and janitorial work, she opened her home to children in need and eventually built Hale House into a refuge for babies born addicted to drugs and children affected by HIV/AIDS. Her legacy remains one of service, dignity and radical love.
