Good morning, this is your New York surf zone forecast for Sunday, September 28th, brought to you by the National Weather Service.
Across all our beaches today, we're looking at pretty mellow conditions overall. Surf heights are running around two feet consistently from Brooklyn all the way out to the eastern end of Long Island, so whether you're heading to Coney Island, Rockaway, Jones Beach, or even the Hamptons, you're getting the same small swell situation.
The good news is rip current risk is low across the board, which means conditions are relatively calm. That said, always remember that rip currents can pop up anywhere near groins, jetties, or piers, so stay aware out there.
Now let's talk weather. We're looking at a gradual clearing trend this morning. Brooklyn and Kings will see mostly cloudy skies until around 9 AM before clearing out. Queens beaches will be partly sunny until noon, and down on the South Shore and eastern Suffolk, expect mostly cloudy conditions lingering until about noon to one PM. After that, everyone gets sunshine for the afternoon. Perfect beach day setup.
Temperatures today are pleasant, hovering in the mid to upper 70s, with highs reaching the upper 70s in Brooklyn and mid 70s everywhere else. Winds are light and variable, starting out of the southeast to east at around five miles per hour and shifting to the south or southwest as we move through the afternoon. These calm winds mean you won't get any wind chop messing up what little swell we have.
Water temperatures are in the lower 70s for most spots, with the eastern end of Suffolk running slightly cooler in the upper to mid 60s. Still swimmable if you're brave enough to venture in.
We've got no thunderstorm potential today and UV levels are moderate, so grab some sunscreen if you're planning to spend extended time outside.
High tides are happening around midday at various inlets, with Coney Island seeing its high at 12:39 PM, East Rockaway at 12:36 PM, Jones Inlet at 12:23 PM, Fire Island Inlet at 12:04 PM, and Shinnecock Inlet at 12:31 PM.
