Description
Fr. Peter George Flynn continues his Holy Thursday series on the seven churches, moving from the Garden of Gethsemane to the House of Annas — the first stop on Our Lord’s journey through his Passion. He reflects on the strange grip of power that kept Annas pulling strings long after his term as High Priest had ended, and on the painful irony that it was here, as Christ stood trial and emerged looking more innocent than guilty, that Peter publicly disowned him. Fr. Peter George then turns to the Book of Revelation’s letter to the Church of Smyrna — a poor and persecuted community told to fear nothing — and to its bishop St. Polycarp, one of the last living links to the Apostles, who at the age of 86 refused to deny his Lord and went to his death in the amphitheatre. A rich and moving episode for the days leading into Holy Week.
