Catechesis – The Way of the Cross: The Fourth Sorrow of Our Lady – Fr Peter George Flynn OFM

Published 1 month, 3 weeks ago
Description

Fr. Peter turns to the fourth sorrow of Our Lady, her meeting with Jesus as he carried his cross to Calvary. Drawing on St. Peter of Alcantara’s vivid meditation, Cardinal Newman’s stations of the cross and St. Bonaventure’s theology of compassion, he reflects on how Our Lady’s suffering by compassion exceeded any bodily suffering and why Newman names her Queen of Martyrs. He also explores the theology of free will that underlies the sorrow: Our Lady was not obliged to follow her son on the Way of the Cross, yet she chose to, and in so doing gained merit and became the intercessor through whom Simon of Cyrene was sent to help him. A profound Lenten meditation on the cross we are each given to carry and the mother who walks beside us as we carry it.
